When an API is better

A visual capture is not a replacement for structured data engineering. If you need thousands of records, calculations across raw fields, guaranteed machine-readable values, transactional automation or high-frequency trading-style updates, use an API, database or dedicated integration.

Live screenshots are strongest when the visual source itself is valuable and the cost of rebuilding it is higher than the benefit. They are an interface-level shortcut, not a universal data layer.

How to design one that stays useful

  • One board, one decision context. Do not turn every page you visit into a snapshot.
  • Crop aggressively. Keep the signal, remove navigation and unrelated content.
  • Group by cadence. Put fast-changing signals together and slower reference panels elsewhere.
  • Use hierarchy. Make the most important snapshot larger instead of giving every tile equal weight.
  • Refresh with intent. The goal is less checking, not a new reason to stare at a dashboard all day.
